without comments

After a hard week’s work, all the stress & mad rush, Fujiya & Miyagi’s gig was a fantastic reward. This year we had Múm, Broken Social Scene, the Bird and the Bee, and tons of other at the Mosaic Music Festival. I’m looking forward to next year’s lineup.

Chanel’s Mobile Art

without comments

There’s tons of art exhibition and some travelling museum these days. But Karl Lagerfeld, the man behind Chanel, chose to bring the idea to a totally different level. A truely mobile exhibition, even the space is a piece of art itself. Karl Lagerfeld commissioned Zaha Hadid to design a mobile and collapsible container to house works from 20 brilliant artists around the world. This mothership had landed in Hong Kong, hopefully, more cities to go, so world can have a glimpse at this amazing mothership.

Utterubbish: A Collection of UseLess Ideas

without comments

Utterubbish: A Collection of UseLess Ideas
, an independently-curated design event will make its debut as the feature event of the Singapore Design Festival 2007 this November. Presented by DesignSingapore Council and produced by Utterubbish Pte Ltd and curated by Jackson Tan, Black Design, Utterubbish is a unique design event that presents ideas, works and exhibits by 30 leading international and local designers and creators unified in their exploration on how design can create value for individuals, society and the world, whether Social, Cultural, Emotional, Functional, Economic, Commercial or Intellectual. It fully integrates an exhibition, a conference, talks and workshops, a publication and a retail concept store to engage audiences as diverse as professional designers and design students to school students, community groups and families in presentations that dramatically highlight the role and direction design plays in creating a sustainable future. This landmark event runs from 28 November to 16 December 2007 at the historic City Hall of Singapore.

Jackson Tan, Curator and Creative Director of Utterubbish, stresses that “Many people still think of designers as only ‘brand names’ and that design is beyond the reach and involvement of the average individual. We want to show in a fun, witty and interactive way that everyone can understand and participate in the design process and how it can create value for ourselves, society and the world. We want to engage the audience in the design process and make design accessible to everyone. Anyone can come and look at the exhibits, interacting with designers at the conference, soaking in the experience at workshops, read design publications and even buy sustainable design products at the UseLess Shop. In my view, all this goes towards building and fostering design sensibilities and culture in Singapore.”

Utterubbish is founded on the basic premise that ‘less is more’, Utterubbish is a witty review of recycling, redemption and recourse through design. By transmuting the original meaning of “Useless” to “Use Less”, it demonstrates that what seems less sane can make more sense, less money can inspire more value, less machine means more human and less resources leads to more creativity. Over-arching themes include sustainable design and eco-design, design activism, a return to the promotion of craft and personal involvement and experience in the design process. The event also highlights how design can be intelligent, meaningful, useful and most of all, fun.

Kubik

with one comment

Previously there was the mobile discos in shipping containers…
Now there’s popup nightclubs in Barcelona and Lisbon… I so wanna visit Kubik…

Kubik kubik kubik

Designed by Berlin-based urban design agency ModulorBeat and light artist Andreas Barthelmes, Kubik is built from stacked, reused water tanks. Lighting in each cube is controlled separately, which makes for a spectacular backdrop that pulses to a DJ’s beats. Kubik operated a temporary club in Berlin last year and has now (wisely) relocated to warmer climes. Kubik Barcelona is located in two separate locations in the Parc del Fòrum: one venue is illuminated in green, the other in magenta. It won’t come as a surprise that Kubik Barcelona is sponsored by three beverage companies: Estrella Galicia (beer) Strongbow Gold (apple cider) and Burn (energy drink). Kubik’s 275 illuminated cubes house a bar and lounge from Sunday through Wednesday, and a club from Friday through Saturday.
